One of the realities of living abroad is that you live in a few different realities. My life abroad and my life in the US bear so little resemblance, have so little in common (other than me), that it is often hard to relate the two, or recognize their continuity. So recently this bipolarity was challenged by the intrusion of one world into the other - my family came to visit.
It has happened before, I have had a few friends in town (or in country), but this most recent visit was definitely the most mind bending. It was wonderful to be able to share a little peak at my life here with these people who have known me (and put up with me) the longest, and whom I love the best. They have followed my career (using that term loosely) and it was exciting to show them where I have most recently landed. It was a great visit, but, time being so limited, I'm sorry that they couldn't really get a very good taste of my work here, or the people I work with. So, while they have left understanding a bit more about where and how I live, I think the why is still a little bit lacking.
Oh well, we sure had a great time at the beach... (sunburn aside).
Due to the insane snow fall on the east coast, they missed the first two days of their visit, and had to make due with little more than a week. In that short time, they still managed to dip their toes in Chiang Mai, Mae Sot, Sukhothai, Koh Samui, and Bangkok. Not bad.
I'll post some photos shortly (taken with my very exciting new digital camera!! woo hoo!! I'll make sure this one doesn't follow the fate of any of its predecessors: drowning (it was the third dunking that finally did it in), sand lodged in shutter mechanism (from sliding down Jordanian sand dune), and theft from luggage (on journey from Calcutta to Bangkok)).
So, Mom, Dad, and Steph - thanks for trekking half way around the world (almost exactly literally) to visit me. I hope you enjoyed it. You'll never find food spicy enough to satisfy you ever again.
