Yes we can!

I feel compelled, on this 20th day of January, in the year 2009, to commemorate the ascension into the highest office of our American land, of Barack Hussein Obama, a day which I join millions of others in hoping will be one that marks the dawn of a new era of American history, and begins a presidency marked by hope and change, and remembered for the ages.

Our nation, and I do not feel it an exaggeration to add, the world, has rallied around this once unlikely leader. Today more eyes will watch him sworn into office than have ever before taken interest in the initiation of an American president. One can hardly avoid being buoyed by the hope swelling on all sides, even while internalizing the tempering caution given to us by the very source of this inspiration. Even here on the border, I have seen eyes light up with hope of what his reign might do for those eeking out an existence across the river.

I feel proud to be a citizen of a country which has begun to recognize and own its mistakes, and start down a road of repair. It is my hope today that we do not lay this burden on one set of shoulders alone, but each take responsibility for our own share of what we owe to our communities, our country, and the world.

Mr. Obama, I appalaud you, and I welcome you.
