the little things

I have just returned from the well known Chiang Mai Sunday night walking market. Its a consuming affair, that takes over the center of the old city with its colors and smells and sounds, oozing down soi's, bending around corners, encompassing temples, and absorbing all within the vicinity into its colorful, teeming throngs. The wares are varied, jewelry, lanterns, ceramics, clothing, and of course food, of every color, shape, and flavor. Particularly if it can be put on a stick; Thais do love their food on a stick.

On this particular Sunday, I was feeling less than motivated to revisit the market, not in the mood to deal with crowds, eager venders, and inflated prices. I have been to the market many times, and am familiar with its offerings, and while the details may very, the general experience does not. I went tonight at the behest of friends, not expecting to experience the enchantment of new visitors. It didn't take long, though before I was one again taken in by its charms. Watching a magic show, where som tum appeared out of hats rather than rabbits, sitting to hear friends wail on their saxs at a sidewalk cafe, re-discovering the world's best passionfruit juice, buying Christmas gifts, and indulging in purchases I don't really need (such as beautiful little ceramic handleless tea cups and handmade lavender soap).

The number of locals in that attend each week, though, should be a clue. That even those who live nearby can't help but return again and again, to wander through in amusement and appreciation of this magical gathering. In the end, I'm glad I went, enjoying the fresh evening after day too hot for November, finding enjoyment in the little things.
